We finally had a face-to-face with one of the surgery residents today, at about 7:30 PM. Apparently there was much discussion to be had before coming to see us.
The ultrasound shows that Lucy's liver is fine. Since fluid accumulation in the abdomen is often a sign of liver failure or damage, the docs wanted to rule this out first (despite the fact that her labs looked normal - better safe than sorry). It seems as if the distention is a result of pockets of fluid that remain on the side of her body opposite of the drain. I am still unclear about how this fluid can remain localized. Regardless, this fluid needs to be drained as well, as it is going nowhere.
Tomorrow morning the team hopes to be able to schedule another abdominal drain, but this time in ultrasound as opposed to IR. Since the current drain (on the right side of her abdomen) is not seeing much output, there is a chance that they will take it out. They may have to put a drain or two in on the affected side, however. Again, they will send this fluid out to see if it has infection or is from the lymph.
In a nutshell, we got some very good news today. Thank you for your prayers!
Love,
Melissa
