Out of Surgery and Doing Fine

Greetings!

Lucy is out of surgery and resting in her room! Here is a recap of our day, and of the surgery.

After a restless night of GoLytley (sp?), we were whisked off to the surgery floor at 8:30 this morning. Lucy was given some medicine to make her relax so that the mask for the anesthesia was not so scary. I must say that this has got to be just about as helpful to the sobbing parent (yes, me) as it is for the little patient. Lucy was sticking her tongue out, blowing spit bubbles (ordinarily not cute, but in this situation it pegged the "cute" meter), asking how "Lolan and Nouis" were at least 30 times, and giggling her head off - all the while with eyes at half mast. We were able to be with her when they put her under, which was a blessing.

Surgery began at 10:23 this morning, and ended at around 4:00 this afternoon. The surgeon commented that she really made him work hard today - I GUESS SO! Below is what the surgeon told us, and forgive me if it makes no sense or is mildly inaccurate, as it was hard to listen closely when all I could think about was the fact that Lucy was going to be OK.

The surgery went well, but was quite a complicated case. The Duhamel procedure that they did in China was a ragged mess. This "pouch", he removed, a total of about 4-5 inches of colon. She does still have colon - the right side of her colon, to be specific. However, this right side of the colon, is now on the left side of her body, along with her appendix. She should remain continent, and live a normal life. Recovery will entail just the opposite of what we have been doing for the last few months, but after a few weeks/months and some bowel management, her colon will begin to function normally. The surgeon also cleaned up her scars on her belly.

She is now resting, and her pain is being managed by an epidural and the pain management team here at CCH.

We are so thrilled that we were able to find this doctor and this hospital.

More tomorrow. Thanks for all of your prayers!

Love,
Ed, Mel and Lucy!
