Greetings!
July 12
I am writing this on Sunday morning at 6:30, Shanghai time (which means that it is about 5:30 PM Memphis time on Saturday). This jetlag business is the pits. I woke up yesterday morning at 1:30 AM and was WIDE AWAKE for the rest of the day. I found myself at the oddest times instantly falling asleep. The ground still feels like its moving.

Day 2
Old Shanghai Architectre
Starbucks in Old City!
Today we started off in the Old City of Shanghai. This part of town has the architecture of 400 years ago, street vendors, and even some modern shops.
Old Tearoom

There is an old tearoom there that the men of Shanghai have been going to for hundreds of years. They bring their own tea and just use the hot water there. As we were walking through the vendors, we spied Ed talking to some Chinese girls. We figured that they had trapped him in to one of those endless scams that go on in one of the markets, where people come up to you and ask you if you want to buy a watch, or a DVD player. In our rescue attempts, we found out that one of the girls had approached him and said, “You know, you look JUST like the governor of California.” Needless to say, Ed (AKA Arnold) has yet to live that down.
Near the teahouse in Old City is a 400 year old garden called YuYuan
Garden. It was just beautiful. We learned all sorts of interesting things, such as, all the pathways in the garden zig-zag because evil spirits are believed to only be able to run in a straight line; men always take the left side and women the right (women are always right – HA!).

We then left and went on our rescheduled cruise through the Bund area on the Huangpu River. It took about an hour and we got to see the absolutely incredible skyline of Shanghai.
After a brief surprise meeting with the main China person from our agency, we all went out to a local Chinese restaurant. What a treat! Our guide, Betty, goes to this restaurant all of the time, and she had to do the ordering. This is COMPLETELY different from anything you would find in a Chinese restaurant in the states – except the rice and the noodles.
From there we went to the Shanghai Circus. Amazing. Circ de Soleil has nothing on these guys! There were no animals or traditional clowns, just acrobatics. There were parts where we just couldn’t look.
Today we have more sightseeing planned, and then tomorrow we are off to our respective provinces in the morning, and will get our babies that afternoon!
We love you and miss you all!

Melissa,
You have been in my thoughts and prayers! Luci is blessed to be part of such a special family. Make sure to buy pearls to give your daughter later - graduation, wedding, etc. - I forgot to mention it to you earlier. I hope you and Ed enjoy every moment.
Dear Melissa & Ed,
I finally figured out how to get on your blog & I"m really enjoying reading it. I tried to write several times but couldn't figure out how to send it. Loran is over now and showed me so I"m on a run now.
We're so happy for you both and anxiously awaiting Monday. The boys are with us this weekend and are doing fine with the help of Aunt Catherine & Loran. Loran took them swimming today and Catherine & the girls are spending the night along with Maddie as we have a church function Sunday morning. Merry Makers Mass & breakfast.
Our best withes to you both & good luck. We love you both.
Love Pauline and Stash
Hey Melissa and Ed (AKA "Arnold")
I'm at Mom and Dad's and Loran showed me blogging essentials too. So here I am enjoying the inside scoop in China. I'm thinking about you daily and keeping you all in my prayers.
P.S. to my comments. I read Sandra's message about the pearls & it's an excellent idea. Just be careful and shop at a reputable dealer. Just wanted to let you know what we were told when in China. (regular jewlry shop and not a street vendor.)
Bye again, Pauline
I am so glad you are able to do so much traveling. Ben and I have always secretely thought that Ed looks like the Terminator. We are excited for your guys.
Love, the Roth Family
Thinking of you both!! We are so excited about your big day. We enjoy reading your blog! Take Care!

Hey Melissa & Ed:
We got your blog from Grandmom's e-mail because we lost/couldn't find the address you gave us. Figures! Today at a luncheon with some church folks we met a seven year old young lady with the name Lucia but pronounced Lushia. She was almost another Louis only in a bright red dress. We love the Terminator analogy but I was thinking more along the lines of Kindergarten Cop. Our prayers our with you. Thanks for keeping us posted.

Melissa & Ed,
If you want to buy pearls..try to go to "Amylins" in Shanghai. Her website is www.amy-pearl.com. 3 stores in Shanghai. The FedEx pilots shopped there for pearls & it comes highly recommended. I have a necklace, earrings & bracelet from Amylins.
Take care,
Mary Ann
Uncle Govenator...yeah guess who's going to spread that around and never let you forget it! haha It seems like everything is going well. I'm really excited to meet Lucy!
love, Anna
