July 11, Friday
Greetings!
It is 3:50 PM Shanghai time and we have somehow managed to get a full day of sightseeing in. The jetlag is setting in now, so we were thrilled to get back here to the hotel room and relax a bit before dinner.
We have a terrific tour guide. I am going to call her Betty because I do not know if she would be OK with us using her name in our blog. She is one organized little lady! We missed our scheduled boat cruise on the Huangpu River because the majority of us were getting stamps (chops) made for family and friends, and she had our entire schedule rearranged and the cruise rescheduled for tomorrow in seconds. She is from Shanghai and speaks the local dialect, Shanghainese (I am sure I am spelling this wrong).
There are 4 couples in our little group here. We will all split up when we go to our children’s respective provinces, but will meet up again in Guangzhou. It is so nice to have others who are in the same boat here with us!

Day 1
We started out with a visit to The Bund, located on the Huangpu River. It is basically a walking area and a street with shops along the river. While there, we went to a tea shop and had a “tea tasting” – which was quite interesting!

We started out with a visit to The Bund, located on the Huangpu River. It is basically a walking area and a street with shops along the river. While there, we went to a tea shop and had a “tea tasting” – which was quite interesting!
We then went on to Nanjing Road, which is a busy shopping street with large department stores, and fancy shops. Here, Betty decided that it would be a great idea for us to get a traditional foot massage. Ed said that it was definitely money well spent ($20). I opted out, as my country music star toes have had enough abuse lately. The best part of that was the sound! I know that sounds odd, but there was so much popping and slapping that I think the masseuses could start a band. After the massage, we strolled along Nanjing Road for a bit. This is not the best picture, but I can't figure out how to rotate images on Ed's computer yet. Check out the bikes Lou!
After Nanjing Road, Betty had the driver take us to another shopping and dining street (the name escapes me), where we milled around and took pictures.Observations
One of the most helpful phrases we have learned today is “bu yao” (phonetic spelling), which means, “I don’t want it”. The number of people hawking their wares on the streets is astounding – anything from watches and CD’s to paper fans. And their tenacity is disturbing. Sometimes whole groups will descend upon you at once.

Personal space is not is observed here.
One of the Moms we are traveling with speaks Chinese. It’s awesome to get the inside scoop on what everyone is really saying.
We love you all and miss you!
Say a little prayer for Lucy!
Like I promised, D, Country music star toes.
